The Helen Wilson Prize, Heatherley Open Studio Exhibition

Press and Critique:

'Lang’s strength is his ability to immortalise the expression of the subjects, transmitting their emotions; joy, fear, anguish and love. On analysis of Lang’s work, we are able to understand his talent in conveying passions and feelings that are able to touch and stimulate our subconscious mind.' Christopher Rosewood, European Confederation of Art Critics

'Lang's use of colour and chiaroscuro, in an impressionistic discipline, is highly skilled and wholly exquisite.' Art World Talk

'Lang adds to the refined reality and post-impressionist technique, something more personal and the result is arresting and truly emotional.' Art Press 24

Who I am

My name is Michael Jules Lang. My professional career in IT took me all over the world, living for periods of time in Brazil, Canada and Africa; my sensibility was not indifferent to the stimulating cultures I encountered: the warmth and the colours of Brazil in contrast with the pale and cold of Canada, were a source of infinite inspiration for the genesis of artworks.

I was born in London to an Anglo-French family that provided me with a bilingual education. Passionate about art since an early age, I started drawing and painting very early and rapidly developed an interest for classical art, since I was fascinated by the images of mythological heroes of ancient Greece. Supported by my family, it was my mother who took me to London's National Gallery in order to see for the first time the talents of famous Italian Renaissance painters, including Sandro Botticelli, my first artistic influence.

Art training

My academic education took me far from art, as I achieved degrees in IT, Physics and Maths, but my pure and strong interest for art motivated me to continue to draw and paint, taking part and then running the University Art Club.

After being divided between art and science for years, I decided to fully engage my real passion and consequently took art classes. I attended a foundation course at the Lavender Hill Studios Art School and the full course of the Virtual Art Academy, which I completed ahead of schedule, from which I gained a new professional approach to painting, studying composition, form, colour, process, visual poetry and music. I was determined to learn as much as possible and was tutored by many practising artists, some of them at the Heatherley School of Fine Art, where I had the opportunity to practise with portraits and figures at life-classes; I also participated in workshops with various artists, where I developed my own style and technique.

Why I paint

I enjoy all genres but portraits are definitely my favourite because there’s a magical moment while painting a portrait when the jumble of coloured shapes suddenly transforms into the sitter. I use oil paint for my artworks because its sheer lusciousness and ooziness is irresistible. Its versatility is more astonishing - intense or subdued colour, thin or thick texture, wet paint into wet or dry paint and more.

Please get in touch below about having a portrait painted or drawn or for anything else. I will reply quickly.
